Insulin Is Used to Treat Diabetes (1922)
In 1869, spurred by a medical student's observation of cells in the
pancreas called "Islets of Langerhans," scientists began
working to identify the role of insulin, as well as to extract and
purify it. Today we know that insulin is a hormone that regulates
carbohydrate metabolism. Patients with diabetes have either decreased
production of insulin or decreased abilities to absorb it. A fourteen
